Add WP menu items

After you make a Word Press page, you need to add it to the menu.

In the dashboard, click Appearance, Menu

Check the new page, Add to menu, drag it to the right if it should be indented, then save the menu.

Curvy text in Word 2013

Making curvy text in Word 2013 is slightly different than in Word 2007 I found out.

You start the same, insert Word Art
But then you type the text, and END with choosing which type of Word Art to apply through Text Effects.

Setting Multiple tab leaders in Word

Setting Multiple tab leaders in Word 2013 can't be done.

The word-around is to open it in an earlier version (I did it in 2007), select all the tabs, paragraph call-out box, tab, select a leader, OK.

I did have a couple of corrupt tabs that prevented me, but once I dealt with them individually the rest worked properly.

PowerPoint 2013 Can't run Youtube, use Google Slides

Cannot play video from YouTube through PowerPoint 2013

At least they built a tool so you could do this easily.

But in so doing, they removed the old tricky way.

Except the tool is broken, even after you install the updates that's supposed to fix it.

So, use Google Slides.

Yet Another Mail Merge

Yet Another Mail Merge is a Google sheets icon that can produce an email merge up to 200 (PER 24 HOURS PERIOD!) at a time. It will also indicate if an email has been sent.

It needs a Google sheet with email addresses and any information fields you want to merge, and a draft email with fields the same as the information columns in the Google sheet with << >> around them (i.e. <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>).

You find Yet Another Mail Merge in Add-ons, and have to accept it to use it. Then it will be added to the add-ons menu and you can use it.

How to make a website with a discussion board that includes externals

An Education instructor wants to collaborate with teachers in the field. She has a Google site that is shared with other MRU education instructors as well as various non-MRU employees (teachers).

To make a discussion board, a Google group discussion board is in bedded.

For it to work, the same members needed to be added to the Google group. The tricky thing is that the Google group by default does not allow non-institutional (MRU) people in it. To let them in go into the group, manage (upper right), basic permissions (left half-way down), basic permissions. In the "Join the group" section you will see the ability to "Allow new users not in mtroyal.ca", then save.

Then add non-MRU people.

Only after they have accepted the invitation can they post.

Teach Parents Tech

Rod showed me a new website, made by Google, that can be used to send a form email to faculty with how-to videos on common Google and general computer tasks. It's at http://www.teachparentstech.org/ .
